We review chemical evolution models developed for M31 as well as the abundance determinations available for this galaxy. Then we present a recent chemical evolution model for M31 including radial gas flows and galactic fountains along the disk, as well as a model for the bulge. Our models are predicting the evolution of the abundances of several chemical species such as H, He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ca and Fe. From comparison between model predictions and observations we can derive some...

Let $n$ be an integer such that the modular curve $X_0(n)$ is hyperelliptic of genus $\ge2$ and such that the Jacobian of $X_0(n)$ has rank $0$ over $\mathbb Q$. We determine all points of $X_0(n)$ defined over quadratic fields, and we give a moduli interpretation of these points. As a consequence, we show that up to $\overline{\mathbb Q}$-isomorphism, all but finitely many elliptic curves with $n$-isogenies over quadratic fields are in fact $\mathbb Q$-curves, and we list all exceptions. We...

We generalize the local renormalization group (RG) equation to theories with chiral anomalies. We find that a new anomaly is required by the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions. Taking into account the new anomaly, the trace of the energy momentum tensor is expressed in terms of the covariant flavor currents, instead of the consistent ones. This result is used to show that a flavor rotation induced by the RG flow can be eliminated by a choice of scheme even in the presence of chiral anomalies....

This paper examines the identification power of assumptions that formalize the notion of complementarity in the context of a nonparametric bounds analysis of treatment response. I extend the literature on partial identification via shape restrictions by exploiting cross-dimensional restrictions on treatment response when treatments are multidimensional; the assumption of supermodularity can strengthen bounds on average treatment effects in studies of policy complementarity. This restriction can...

The Vista Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea survey (VVV) is a near-IR ESO public survey devoted to study the Galactic bulge and southern inner disk covering 560 deg$^2$ on the sky. This multi-epoch and multi-wavelength survey has helped to discover the first brown dwarfs towards the Galactic center, one of the most crowded areas in the sky, and several low mass companions to known nearby stars. The multi-epoch information has allowed us to calculate precise parallaxes, and put some constraints on...

Quantum private query (QPQ) is a kind of quantum protocols to protect both users' privacy in their communication. There is an interesting example, that is, Alice wants to buy one item from Bob's database, which is composed of a quantity of valuable messages. QPQ protocol is the communication procedure ensuring that Alice can get only one item from Bob, and at the same time, Bob cannot know which one was taken by Alice. Owing to its practicability, quantum-key-distribution-based QPQ has draw...

In the present article, numerical simulations have been performed to find the bond and site percolation thresholds on two-dimensional Gabriel graphs (GG) for Poisson point processes. GGs belong to the family of proximity graphs and are discussed, e.g., in context of the construction of backbones for wireless ad-hoc networks. In order to find the critical points, finite-size scaling analyses have been performed for several observables. The critical exponents obtained this way verify that the...

In the context of CoRoT, Kepler, Gaia, TESS, and PLATO, precise and accurate stellar ages, masses and radii are of paramount importance. They are crucial to constrain scenarii of planetary formation and evolution. We aim at quantifying how detailed stellar modeling improves the accuracy and precision on age and mass of individual stars. We adopt a multifaceted approach where we examine how the number of observational constraints as well as the uncertainties on observations and on model input...

We determine loop space decompositions of simply-connected four-manifolds, $(n-1)$-connected $2n$-dimensional manifolds provided $n\notin\{4,8\}$, and connected sums of products of two spheres. These are obtained as special cases of a more general loop space decomposition of certain torsion-free $CW$-complexes with well-behaved skeleta and some Poincar\'{e} duality features.

E-strings arise from M2 branes suspended between an M5 brane and an M9 plane. In this paper we obtain explicit expressions for the elliptic genus of two E-strings using a series of string dualities. Moreover we show how this can be used to recover the elliptic genus of two $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic strings using the Horava-Witten realization of heterotic strings in M-theory. This involves highly non-trivial identities among Jacobi forms, and is remarkable in light of the fact that E-strings are...

This is a chapter in an upcoming book on aperiodic order. We go over different versions of tiling cohomology (\v Cech, pattern-equivariant, PV, quotient) with emphasis on the inverse limit constructions used to compute these cohomologies. We then consider the uses of tiling cohomology to distinguish spaces, to understand deformations, and to help understand maps between tiling spaces. The emphasis of this chapter is on substitution tilings and their generalizations, but the underlying ideas...

We present an alternative scheme for an Emergent Universe scenario, developed previously in $Phys.\ Rev.\ D {\bf 86}, 083524 (2012)$, where the universe is initially in a static state supported by a scalar field located in a false vacuum. The universe begins to evolve when, by quantum tunneling, the scalar field decays into a state of true vacuum. The Emergent Universe models are interesting since they provide specific examples of non-singular inflationary universes.

We conduct simulations of turbulent mixing in the presence of a magnetic field, grown by the small-scale dynamo. We show that the scalar gradient field, $\nabla C$, which must be large for diffusion to operate, is strongly biased perpendicular to the magnetic field, ${\mathbf B}$. This is true both early-on, when the magnetic field is negligible, and at late times, when the field is strong enough to back react on the flow. This occurs because $\nabla C$ increases within the plane of a...

As Phil Anderson noted long ago, frustration can be generally defined by measuring the fluctuations in the coupling energy across a plane boundary between two large blocks of material. Since that time, a number of groups have studied the free energy fluctuations between (putative) distinct spin glass thermodynamic states. While upper bounds on such fluctuations have been obtained, useful lower bounds have been more difficult to derive. I present a history of these efforts, and briefly discuss...

By separating concerns of scientific computing from application and implementation details we can derive an interoperable API for data analysis. But what exactly are the concerns of scientific computing? To answer this question, the paper starts with an exploration of the purpose, problems, characteristics, struggles, culture, and...

This work presents Direct Numerical Simulations of capillary wave turbulence solving the full 3D Navier Stokes equations of a two-phase flow. When the interface is locally forced at large scales, a statistical stationary state appears after few forcing periods. Smaller wave scales are generated by nonlinear interactions, and the wave height spectrum is found to obey a power law in both wave number and frequency in good agreement with weak turbulence theory. By estimating the mean energy flux...

We present optical and near-infrared imaging of the field of the z=7.0842 quasar ULAS J112001.48+064124.3 taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. We use these data to search for galaxies that may be physically associated with the quasar, using the Lyman break technique, and find three such objects, although the detection of one in Spitzer Space Telescope imaging strongly suggests it lies at z~2. This is consistent with the field luminosity function and indicates that there is no excess of >L*...

In this article, we consider a configuration of weighted random balls in $\mathbb{R}^d$ generated according to a Poisson point process. The model investigated exhibits inhomogeneity, as well as dependence between the centers and the radii and heavy tails phenomena. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the total mass of the configuration of the balls at a macroscopic level. Three different regimes appear depending on the intensity parameters and the zooming factor. Among the three limiting...

The parametrized Dirac wave equation represents position and time as operators, and can be formulated for many particles. It thus provides, unlike field-theoretic Quantum Electrodynamics (QED), an elementary and unrestricted representation of electrons entangled in space or time. The parametrized formalism leads directly and without further conjecture to the Bethe-Salpeter equation for bound states. The formalism also yields the Uehling shift of the hydrogenic spectrum, the anomalous magnetic...

Consistency relations -- which relate an N-point function to a squeezed (N+1)-point function -- are useful in large scale structure (LSS) because of their non-perturbative nature: they hold even if the N-point function is deep in the nonlinear regime, and even if they involve astrophysically messy galaxy observables. The non-perturbative nature of the consistency relations is guaranteed by the fact that they are symmetry statements, in which the velocity plays the role of the soft pion. In this...

On dwarf galaxy scales, the different shapes of the galaxy stellar mass function and the dark halo mass function require a star-formation efficiency (SFE) in these systems that is currently more than 1 dex lower than that of Milky Way-size halos. Here, we argue that this trend may actually be reversed at high redshift. Specifically, by combining the resolved star-formation histories of nearby isolated dwarfs with the simulated mass-growth rates of dark matter halos, we show that the assembly of...
