Multiple hypothesis tracking (MHT) addresses difficult tracking problems by maintaining alternative association hypotheses until enough good data e.g., features, are collected to select the correct hypotheses. Traditional MHT's cannot track targets over long durations because they frequently generate too many hypotheses to maintain the correct ones with the available processing resources. Track segment graph provides a compact and efficient representation of the key ambiguities in long term...

This report details basic validation of our physics-based EMI models against data collected by the NRL TEMTADS system. The data was collected under laboratory-type conditions using artificial spheroidal targets. The models are essentially exact for these types of targets, and enable detailed comparison of theory and data in support of both model validation and measurement platform characterization.

DARPA's Bootstrapped Learning (BL) program was a research effort to build and evaluate an electronic learner (e-student) that can be instructed by a human in the style of human-mentored learning. The BAE Systems' team was responsible for evaluation, curriculum construction, and instructional mechanisms of the BL program. An independent Learning Team was responsible for the machine learning (ML) algorithms. This report presents BAE Systems' results in developing instructional materials to test...

The PDDOT program is to provide a method of continuously monitoring military plans during execution for deviations from expected performance. Determining such deviations in critical to the success of military operations where the complexity of the battle space and rapidly evolving enemy tactics requires an agile and effective response. In addition, commanders face the challenge of deciding when a deviation is significant enough to warrant the risks of re-planning. The PDDOT project identifies...

The coordination of a team of distributed air vehicles requires a complex optimization, balancing limited communication bandwidths, non-instantaneous planning times and network delays, while at the same time trying to allocate limited resources to spatially diverse locations in a near-optimal fashion in a dynamic and uncertain environment. Given that, in this environment, the optimality of a given plan will not last very long when the information state is constantly changing and being updated,...

In this paper, we describe a space-time adaptive processing (STAP) approach for bistatic space-based radar (SBR) systems. A candidate SBR system employing a transmitter at medium earth orbit (MEO) and an airborne receiver is defined. A STAP configuration for performing wide area ground moving target indication (GMTI) is also specified. STAP performance is analyzed using simulated data in two different bistatic SBR geometries. Standard STAP performance degradation is shown to be a function of...

The problem of scheduling cooperating vehicles is a generalization of the classical vehicle routing problem where certain tasks are linked by precedence constraints and vehicles have varying constrained resources. We describe a type of roll-out algorithm that finds an approximate solution to the problem in real-time and demonstrate the results of the computational experiments.

This work addresses problems of sensor resource management (SRM) in which one or more sensors obtain measurements of the state of one or more targets. For example, an airborne radar may be attempting to track several ground targets, which are sometimes stationary (requiring a synthetic aperture radar mode) and sometimes moving (requiring a ground moving target indication radar mode). The challenge is to schedule the radar modes as the scenario evolves. Such problems can generally be formulated...

Moore's Law would have ceased applying if all new chips had not become multicore a decade ago. Demand for higher performance continues unabated but to achieve that performance, applications must employ parallelization. Programmers are not equipped for that and most codes have no notion of parallelization in them. Meanwhile, compilers are increasingly complex and highly tuned to their target platform, which evolves too rapidly for them to keep up. Hence, research is needed to address these...

The primary objective of this program was to develop the Strategy Development Tool (SDT), a system to aid the Strategy Division of an Air Operations Center (AOC) in authoring robust effects-based plans and assessing their impact on enemy systems. To this end, we conducted research and development in five major stages. First, we developed an EBO plan representation and plan authoring tool for decomposing strategic objectives into desired effects, causal linkages, and tasks. Second, we integrated...

The interaction of air and ground warfare is as old as military aviation itself. As far back as WWI, air interdiction (AI) and close air support (CAS) have been integral missions supporting overall campaign objectives. Originally conceived as a mission to support military ground operations, the purpose of aerial interdiction has gradually changed and widened over time. In World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm, interdiction campaigns attempted to disrupt and destroy enemy goods...

The subject effort is part of the AFRL Effects-Based Operations Program. The goal of this effort was the development of technology for modeling operational-level adversary target systems and centers of gravity (COG). This effort specifically focused on the cross-target systems analysis to predict direct and indirect effects. An analysis of the combination of physical (e.g. petroleum, electric power) and behavioral (e.g. leadership) COGs at the operational level models was performed and the...

SOUND achieves resilient distributed systems by enabling Communities of Trust based on mutual suspicion, transparent accountability, formal methods, and differentially more reliable. The SOUND approach included: Communities of Trust: Using Introduction-Based Routing (IBR) and Reputation algorithms to dynamically establish and adapt trust levels among computational agents. This allowed well-intentioned agents to collaboratively identify and neutralize rogue agents. Accountability: Explored...
