A new robust optimal, adaptive technique for compensating rate and position limits in the joints of a six degree-of-freedom elbow manipulator is presented. In this new algorithm, the unmet demand as a result of actuator saturation is redistributed among the remaining unsaturated joints. The scheme is used to compensate for inadequate path planning, problems such as joint limiting, joint freezing, or even obstacle avoidance, where a desired position and orientation are not attainable due to an...

PSYCHOLOGICAL COMPATIBILITY IN AN INTERNATIONAL CREW IS DISCUSSED. ALTHOUGH DISAGREEMENTS AND CLIQUE FORMATIONS ARE INEVITABLE, THEY CAN BE MINIMIZED BY A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO GROUP SELECTION AND, ESPECIALLY, SELECTION OF A COMMANDER. SELECTION SHOULD BE BASED NOT ONLY ON PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS, BUT ALSO ON THE INDIVIDUAL'S ABILITY TO RELATE TO OTHERS, AND TRAINING SHOULD DEVELOP THIS ABILITY. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN STRESS SITUATIONS IS VERY HELPFUL. GOOD GROUP RELATIONS ARE ALSO AIDED...

My first approach creating a cable organizer. It is able to keep 12 cables each with different diameter from 3 to 8mm. Each cable can be attached and removed without opening anything, just do it. Meanwhile I put my Trinus 3D printer in operation and printed one sample. It turned out really fine in terms of robustness. For bigger diameter cables the fingers are having enough elasticity but for the smaller ones it doesn't fit perfect. It seams I need to rework, so the fingers also get elastic...

The technique of speckle interferometric measurement of asteroids is applied to Vesta and Pallas, yielding diameters of 550 + or - 23 and 673 + or - 55 km, respectively. The improved Vesta speckle diameter is in excellent agreement with other measurements for Vesta. However, the derived Pallas diameter is slightly larger than other measurements. This is perhaps attributable to systematic errors arising as an object's angular diameter nears the seeing disk size. It is alo pointed out that it is...

This project was highly successful demonstrating control of carbon nanotube diameter through control of the synthesis process. Mean tube diameter can be preselected from 0.5 to 0.9nm. A sample predominantly semiconducting with two main tubes (7,5 and 8,3), and a sample of smaller (0.5-0.6nm) and mainly metallic tubes were produced. The process also laid the ground for production of the first pure boron nanotubes. In our SWNT synthesis experiments using CO disproportionation at 6 atm and lower...

This has quantified a database of Markstein numbers for unsteady flames; future work will quantify a database of flame extinction limits for unsteady conditions. Unsteady extinction limits have not been documented previously; both a stretch rate and a residence time must be measured, since extinction requires that the stretch rate be sufficiently large for a sufficiently long residence time. Ma was measured for an inwardly-propagating flame (IPF) that is negatively-stretched under microgravity...

MSC/NASTRAN's performance in the solution of fully-coupled fluid/structure problems is evaluated. NASTRAN is used to perform normal modes (SOL 103) and forced-response analyses (SOL 108, 111) on cylindrical and cubic fluid/structure models. Bulk data file cards unique to the specification of a fluid element are discussed and analytic partially-coupled solutions are derived for each type of problem. These solutions are used to evaluate NASTRAN's solutions for accuracy. Appendices to this work...

We investigate the diameter problem in the streaming and sliding-window models. We show that, for a stream of n points or a sliding window of size n, any exact algorithm for diameter requires Omega(n) bits of space. We present a simple epsilon-approximation algorithm for computing the diameter in the streaming model. Our main result is an epsilon-approximation algorithm that maintains the diameter in two dimensions in the sliding windows model using Omicron [(1/epsilon (exp 3/2) log3 n(log R +...

CR-39 plastic is used as a detector to observe monoenergetic protons. Several samples of CR-39 were exposed to protons of energies 1.5 MeV, 2.2 MeV, 3.2 MeV and 4.3 MeV. After etching measurements were carried out on track diameters produced by protons in all samples. The diameter distributions clearly show an excellent energy resolution of protons of different energies. From our preliminary analysis of data, it appears that the response function for registering protons in CR-39 may be a lot...

Theory and experimental measurements are compared with a novel three-wire thermocouple. Signals from three wires of unequal diameters arc recorded from the thermocouple suspended in constant flow with a periodic temperature fluctuation. It is demonstrated that the reconstructed signal from the three-wire thermocouple requires no compensation for omega less than or equal to 5(sub omega1), where omega, is the natural frequency of the smaller wire. The latter result represents a significant...

The dielectric properties of polar solvents are considered within the context of generic mean spherical approximations. Given the molecular diameter in a spherical representation, the dipole moment, and molecular polarizability, the static permittivity of such a solvent is estimated on the basis of the Wertheim polarization parameter, and a stickiness parameter which accounts for other electrostatic features of the bulk system and non-sphericity of the actual solvent molecules. The stickiness...

The figure depicts aspects of an electrochemical cell for pitting- corrosion tests of material specimens. The cell is designed to generate a region of corrosion having a pit diameter determined by the diameter of a selectable tip. The average depth of corrosion is controlled by controlling the total electric charge passing through the cell in a test. The cell is also designed to produce minimal artifacts associated with crevice corrosion. There are three selectable tips, having diameters of 0.1...

Fifteen new EA's (Earth approachers) have been discovered since September, among them the smallest asteroids on record: 1990 UN, 1991 BA, and 1991 JR, which are in the 10 to 100 m size range (Scotti et al. 1991b). For the first time, we can make estimates of the fluxes near the Earth of these small objects, thought to be the immediate parents of meteorites, from direct observation. In this paper, I show that for EA's larger than a few 100 m, the magnitude-frequency dependence we observe is...

An independent distance scale for Cepheid variables is discussed. The apparent magnitude and the visual surface brightness, inferred from an appropriate color index, are used to determine the angular diameter variation of the Cepheid. When combined with the linear displacement curve obtained from the integrated radial velocity curve, the distance and linear radius are determined. The attractiveness of the method is its complete independence of all other stellar distance scales, even though a...

We discuss the status of coherent integration with the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer (NPOI) Armstrong et al. (1998). Coherent integration relies on being able to phase reference interferometric measurements, which in turn relies on making measurements at multiple wavelengths. The measurement of a cardiac valve's area is a common procedure, usually performed with noninvasive, Doppler-based techniques. Such measurements are not, however, without problems: a potential source of errors is the value of a valve's discharge coefficient. In-vitro pressure and flow measurements relative to the bileaflet valve of four brands were performed. A total of 12 valve samples was studied to cover the entire range of valve sizing. The data were used in the Gorlin formula for valve...

The objective of this work was to study the growth and physical properties of carbon fibers prepared by the ion-bombardment of carbon surfaces, with particular reference to optical obscuration applications. During the contract period, it was decided to include another class of carbon fibers grown by catalytic-chemical-vapor-deposition (CCVD). This initial work showed that submicron diameter filaments of high aspect ration could be grown.
