This thesis presents analysis and characterization of performance of a newly designed, multicolor quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP). Specifically, it focuses on a detector capable of detecting infrared emissions in the near infrared (NIR), mid-wavelength infrared (MWIR), and long-wavelength infrared (LWIR). Through photocurrent spectroscopy and performance analysis, this prototype detector can be classified and prepared for possible future use within the U.S. Armed Forces. Certain...

In this thesis the performance of a step quantum well infrared photodetector, designed by Kevin Lantz (June 2002) and experimentally studied by Michael Touse (September 2003) and Yeo Hwee Tiong (December 2004), was simulated in Matlab using the transfer matrix method. The results obtained by the Matlab program are compared with the experimental results in a try to make inferences about the optimum way of designing QWIP detectors. Simulation of the above implies numerical solution of the SchroÌ...

There is a general consensus among engineers and facility managers of military installations that the utility records and as-built drawings are of poor quality and/or inaccurate. The goal of verifying the location of all underground utilities before commencement of a construction project is usually unachievable. During the early stages of a construction project, an unknown subsurface utility is often discovered which results in a contract modification and an increased price of the project....

In this study, the author develops a MATLAB simulation of area search with acoustic sensors modeled by the Poisson Scan model and the Lambda-Sigma (A-0) model. Detection time results are compared to those given by the much simpler Random Search formula. Random Search was found to closely approximate the more complex models if detection range was selected correctly. Guidelines for selecting the Random Search detection range were developed.

The objective of this thesis is to investigate the requirements and limitations of boost phase ballistic missile intercept systems that contain an interceptor and its guidance sensors (both radar and infrared). A three- dimensional computer model is developed for a multi-stage target with a boost phase acceleration profile that depends on total mass, propellant mass and the specific impulse in the gravity field. The radar cross-section and infrared radiation of the target structure is estimated...

A technique known as the Shadow Method was developed for calculating aerosol optical depths by measuring the radiance difference between shaded and unshaded regions in high-resolution satellite imagery by Vincent (2006). Previous research investigated use of the Shadow Method in regions of dust obscuration using buildings and clouds as shadow generation sources and a variety of background surfaces. A recurring low bias was seen when using the Shadow Method with the QuickBird satellite's...

The objective of this work is to design, assemble, and characterize an optical readout for bi-material MEMs sensor arrays that can be integrated into a THz imaging system. All this effort is a contribution to the goals of the research conducted by the Naval Postgraduate School Sensor Research Laboratory on designing and fabricating THz-optimized bi-material MEMs sensor arrays for THz imaging. Basic concepts of THz radiation and detection are presented. Several aspects of THz imaging, and...

e the fluctuations and provide a clear understanding of the phenomena. This thesis utilized high speed measurements of the atmospheric humidity, temperature and wind speed collected on a tower 10 m above ground level at a coastal location. The humidity data were collected with a high speed infrared humidity sensor. A three axis sonic anemometer provided the wind fluctuation data and a fine wire temperature sensor as well as the sonic anemometer provided atmospheric temperature. All the data...

During the past decade researchers have been considering vector sensors for use in linear towed arrays for passive target detection. Linear processing is often used due to its simplicity and significant directivity improvements. Nonlinear processing holds the potential for further directivity improvements; however, it also presents the risk of amplifying uncorrelated noise. This thesis simulated a correlated signal in uncorrelated noise to investigate the potential of a nonlinear (but...
