The design process associated with large engineering systems requires an initial decomposition of the complex system into modules of design tasks which are coupled through the transference of output data. In analyzing or optimizing such a coupled system, it is essential to be able to determine which interactions figure prominently enough to significantly affect the accuracy of the system solution. Many decomposition approaches assume the capability is available to determine what design tasks...

Now-a-days there has been vast usage of computer in all fields. Even though in college student are allowed to use the computers. While using computers in work it will reduce time and also reduce the work pressure. It is also used to store many data’s and recall it any time. Now learning process has been done online, namely online learning. Already we come across the e- learning, it is the learning process which helps the learner to know about the subject he wants to learn with the help of the...

Based on cosmological rates, it is probable that at least once in the last Gy the Earth has been irradiated by a gamma-ray burst in our Galaxy from within 2 kpc. Using a two-dimensional atmospheric model we have computed the effects upon the Earth's atmosphere of one such burst. A ten second burst delivering 100 kJ/sq m to the Earth results in globally averaged ozone depletion of 35%, with depletion reaching 55% at some latitudes. Significant global depletion persists for over 5 years after the...

The validity problem for certain universal Horn formulas of Kleene algebra with tests (KAT) can be efficiently reduced to the equational theory. This reduction is known as elimination of hypotheses. Hypotheses are used to describe the interaction of atomic programs and tests and are an essential component of practical program verification with KAT. The ability to eliminate hypotheses of a certain form means that the Horn theory with premises of that form remains decidable in PSPACE. It was...

We have modeled the photochemical evolution of the sulfur containing species that were observed in Jupiter's stratosphere after the Shoemaker Levy 9 (SL9) impacts. We find that most of the sulfur is converted to S8 in the first few days. Other important sulfur reservoirs are CS, whose abundance increases markedly with time, and possibly H2CS, HNCS, and NS, whose abundances depend on kinetic reaction rates that are unknown at the present. We discuss the temporal variation of the major sulfur...

The development of a cryogenic insulation system for operation under soft vacuum is presented in this paper. Conventional insulation materials for cryogenic applications can be divided into three levels of thermal performance, in terms of apparent thermal conductivity [k-value in milliwatt per meter-kelvin (mW/m-K)]. System k-values below 0.1 can be achieved for multilayer insulation operating at a vacuum level below 1 x 10(exp -4) torr. For fiberglass or powder operating below 1 x 10(exp -3)...

When analyzing hypotheses about specific situations of interest there is often a need to combine information from multiple sources. This principle belongs to information fusion in general, and is called belief fusion when the evidence is represented as belief functions. Because different situations can involve different forms of belief fusion, there is no single formal model that is suitable for analyzing every situation. It is therefore crucial to identify the most adequate fusion operator for...

Four experiments were conducted to assess whether or not rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) could represent the unperceived movements of a stimulus. Subjects were tested on 2 computerized tasks, HOLE (monkeys) and LASER (humans and monkeys), in which subjects needed to chase or shoot at, respectively, a moving target that either remained visible or became invisible for a portion of its path of movement. Response patterns were analyzed and compared between target-visible and target-invisible...

A suboptimal Kalman filter system which evolves error covariances in terms of a truncated set of wavelet coefficients has been developed for the assimilation of chemical tracer observations of CH4. The truncation is carried out in such a way that the resolution of the error covariance, is reduced only in the zonal direction, where gradients are smaller. Assimilation experiments which last 24 days, and used different degrees of truncation were carried out. These reduced the covariance, by 90, 97...

This study investigated whether a stacked bar s vertical arrangement or single-object properties underlie its accuracy for proportion judgments. We hypothesized that observers would be less accurate when stacked bars were separated than when they formed a single object, according to the object-based theory of attention (Duncan, 1984). Thirty participants judged proportions with three different graph types: bars, stacked bars, and staggered stacked bars. Stacked bars produced smaller error than...

Finite volume methods are a class of discretization schemes that have proven highly successful in approximating the solution of a wide variety of conservation law systems. They are extensively used in fluid mechanics, porous media flow, meteorology, electromagnetics, models of biological processes, semi-conductor device simulation and many other engineering areas governed by conservative systems that can be written in integral control volume form. This article reviews elements of the foundation...

In this proposal, we propose to use collagen mimetic peptide (CMP) as a collagen targeting agents that will allow imaging of invasive PCa. Since CMP binds to unstructured collagens more readily, it is expected to exhibit selective affinity to metastatic PCa tumors known to contain processed and...

The problem of anomaly localization in a resource-constrained cyber system is considered. Each anomalous component of the system incurs a cost per unit time until its anomaly is identified and fixed. Different anomalous components may incur different costs depending on their criticality to the system. Due to resource constraints, only one component can be probed at each given time. The observations from a probed component are realizations drawn from two different distributions depending on...

Multiple hypothesis tracking (MHT) addresses difficult tracking problems by maintaining alternative association hypotheses until enough good data e.g., features, are collected to select the correct hypotheses. Traditional MHT's cannot track targets over long durations because they frequently generate too many hypotheses to maintain the correct ones with the available processing resources. Track segment graph provides a compact and efficient representation of the key ambiguities in long term...

Small Zr additions are known to substantially affect the deformation behavior and strength of polycrystalline NiAl, yet little information is currently available regarding the high-temperature properties of such alloys. Utilizing prealloyed powder technology, a series of four NiAl alloys have been produced containing from 0.05 to 0.7 at. pct Zr. The creep behavior of these alloys was characterized in compression between 1000 and 1400 K at strain rates ranging from approx. O.1 to 10(exp -9)/...

Heteroscedastic two-way ANOVA models are frequently encountered in experimental sciences, e.g., biology, psychology and physics among others. In the literature, classical F-tests are often blindly employed although they are often biased even for moderate heteroscedasticity. To overcome this problem, several approximate tests, e.g., generalized P-values, bootstrap, and permutation-based tests among others, have been proposed in the literature. These tests, however, are computationally intensive...

A composite isogrid panel design for application to a rotorcraft fuselage is presented. An optimum panel design for the lower fuselage of the rotorcraft that is subjected to combined in-plane compression and shear loads was generated using a design tool that utilizes a smeared-stiffener theory in conjunction with a genetic algorithm. A design feature was introduced along the edges of the panel that facilitates introduction of loads into the isogrid panel without producing undesirable local...

The intelligence analysis process consists of a complex, iterative, highly-branched sequence of information gathering and processing steps. Throughout the process, the analyst needs to refer to the hypotheses and information he or she was manipulating at previous points in the process. Robots have become more and more sophisticated. Every robot has its limits. If we face a task that existing robots cannot solve, then, before we start improving these robots, it is important to check whether it is, in principle, possible to design a robot for this task or not. For that, it is necessary to describe what exactly the robots can, in principle, do. A similar problem - to describe what exactly computers can do - has been solved as early as 1936, by Turing. In this paper, we describe...
