The IADIS CELDA 2012 Conference intention was to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. There had been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered...

Tests were performed in order to extend the empirical basis for evaluating the design of flame arrestors to the case of prolonged exposure to a stabilized flame for periods up to 30 minutes. Both parallel plate arrestors and crimped ribbon arrestors, whose dimensions of passageway diameter and length had been shown to be marginal for arresting moving methane/air and butane/air flames were tested. The results of the tests demonstrated that the design criteria (maximum D sub 4) to withstand...

Evolutionary solar models are computed using a new stellar evolution code, MOSEC (Modular Stellar Evolution Code). This code has been designed with carefully controlled truncation errors in order to achieve a precision which reflects the increasingly accurate determination of solar interior structure by helioseismology. A series of models is constructed to investigate the effects of the choice of equation of state (OPAL or MHD-E, the latter being a version of the MHD equation of state...

The phenomenal growth of science and technology in the past decade has made science teaching more important, and at the same time more difficult. An awareness of these changes has caused an unprecedented public support for sound science programs in the schools. A good science program makes effective use of equipment and materials in teaching basic science concepts. The National Defense Education Act of 1958, Title III, has provided educators with greater opportunity to strengthen instruction...

Plasticizers are important modifiers of synthetic resins and their presence will greatly influence the physical characteristics of lacquers. This report describes a procedure for the identification and determination of seven plasticizers in nitrocellulose, vinyl and acrylic type lacquers by programmed temperature gas-liquid chromatography (PTGLC). The chromatographic analysis is conducted on the sample which has been treated to remove the resins. Plasticizers are identified from their relative...

Methods and apparatus for determining organic carbon in aqueous solution are described. The method comprises subjecting the aqueous solution to electrolysis, for generating oxygen from water, and simultaneously to ultraviolet radiation, for oxidation of substantially all organic carbon to carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is measured and the value is related to the concentration of organic carbon in the aqueous solution.

The work contained in this report encompasses an attempt to correlate the chemical and physical structure of a polymer with its ablative performance. A broad range of epoxy resins and curing agents were employed as model systems. Various tools such as 'alpha rod' testing, thermogravimetric analysis, crosslink density studies, and infrared-red spectroscopy were used in making this correlation. The epoxy novolac type resin performed the best of all the epoxy resins in the 'alpha rod'...

Research has demonstrated that small-unit cohesion bears a strong positive relationship to small-unit combat performance and resistance to combat stress. Similarly, personnel turbulence, which negatively affects small-unit integrity and leader-led stability, has been shown to erode cohesion, resulting in a reduction of soldier performance. This report integrates historical and recent research literature to document the relationship among cohesion, performance, and personnel turbulence and to...

In an effort to help determine the feasibility of the Urea process for production of the amine fuels, AFRPL established an in-house program to develop a useful analytical technique for monitoring the critical DMU to UDMH reaction. It was the absence of such a technique that presented problems for Vicksburg Chemical Company during their production contract with AFLC. Using laboratory scale equipment, AFRPL produced UDMH using purified DMU. Analysis of both reaction mixture and distillate was...

In exploring methods to maximize energy conservation for demilitarizing U.S. Navy ordnance, an in situ autoclave melting procedure was evaluated. After reviewing the literature for both theoretical and experimental investigations of thermal explosions, it was found that: The literature is replete with warnings that 'critical temperature' and 'time-to-explosion' calculated for chemically pure explosive systems are most optimistic and a resume of some of these warnings is warranted again here....

Maximum displacements of lever presses by rats were recorded under 8 successively-smaller 'reinforcement zones' (RZ). The largest RZ included displacements from 3.29 degrees to 44.01 degrees, the smallest, from 23.65 degrees to 28.74 degrees. Work expended was linearly proportional to displacement. As the RZ decreased, displacement distributions reflected a 'least effort' tendency: distributions peaked at the lower limit of RZ and most nonreinforced presses fell just below the lower limit....

During the year 1962-1963 research was devoted to preliminary research on the luminosity emitted when 2cdS, cooled to liquid helium temperature, is bombarded with electrons. Experiments carried out on CdS tend to emphasize the importance, increasing with current, of the oblique transition. The central transition, not very strong for weak currents, increases with the current although more slowly than does the oblique transition. This means that for CdS, the number of electrons reaching the...

An image model was used to predict the sound pressure field everywhere within isospeed water overlying a sloping absorbing bottom. All lengths scale with the dump distance, which is the distance from the apex of the wedge to the point where the depth is equal to the minimum uniform depth that can support propagation of the lowest normal mode. Measurements made in a laboratory tank with a 9.5 deg. sand bottom with density and speed of sound 2.0 and 1.1 times those of water showed qualitative...

Plastic embryological models lack the excitement of seeing real, live embryos. Chick embryos are often used to demonstrate embryological development and blood circulation to students but this necessitates the death of the organism. Eggs are easily obtained from captive fish; and are easy to display to students. Embryological features common to early human...
