We report on the results of 3-4 micrometers spectroscopy of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) UGC 5101. It has a cool far-infrared color and a LINER-type optical spectrum and so, based on a view gaining some currency, would be regarded as dominated by star formation. However, we find that it has strong 3.4 micrometers carbonaceous dust absorption, low equivalent width 3.3 micrometers polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission, and a small 3.3 micrometers PAH to far-infrared...

The energy sources of nine infrared luminous galaxies (IRLGs) are diagnosed based on their ground-based 3-4 micron spectra. Both the equivalent width of the 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission feature and the 3.3 micron PAH to far-infrared luminosity ratio are analyzed. Assuming that nuclear compact starburst activity in these sources produces the 3.3 micron PAH emission as strongly as that in starburst galaxies with lower far-infrared luminosities, the following results...

The clock offset between a GPS-based NTP time server and NTP time client software, installed in the MS Windows Operating System (OS) and the Linux OS on PCs, are measured and evaluated. The clock offset on MS Windows 98 OS shows a trend with a range of about 55 ms. The NTP time client software on MS Windows OS adjusts the internal clock with the Application Program Interface (API) timer function. The resolution of the API timer function depends on the hardware interrupt of the PC system timer,...

Lunar occultations were analyzed to detect errors in the proper motion system of the Hipparcos frame. The analysis suggests much larger errors in the rotation of the Hipparcos reference frame than those explained by the Hipparcos team, which were determined from the direct comparison between the Hipparcos and FK5 catalogs.

This paper reviews recent progress in the determinations of astronomical constants. By collecting the results on scale constants and precession, the author updates the former International Astronomical Union (IAU) File of Current Best Estimates (of astronomical constants) (Standish, 1995). The revised list is illustrated in Table 3. Here, the references for the items that differ from the previous version are as follows: (1) Tholen and Buie (1997) for the mass ratio of Pluto+Charon to that of...

From an analysis of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observational data compiled by the U.S. Naval Observatory from MJD 44089.994 to 51618.250 (McCarthy, 2000), the authors showed that a strong peak around -400 sidereal days in the spectrum of its differences from the IERS96 nutation theory could be explained by adding a model Free Core Nutation (FCN) term in the form of a single damped oscillation. Then they developed a new analytical theory of nonrigid-Earth nutation that included the...
