Study efforts were focused on quantitative determinations of meiofauna (herein defined as benthic metazoans that pass through a sieve with a mesh opening of 0.500 mm and which are retained on a sieve with a mesh opening of 0.044 mm) that occur in three different sedimentary regimes in the Venezuela Basin. The vertical distributions of meiofauna in each sediment were examined to a depth of 10 cm to establish the existence of significant vertical differences in meiofauna densities. Biomass...

A microhematocrit tube technique for diagnosis of human filariasis has been previously described. A system incorporating heparin, EDTA (ethylenediaminotetraacetate) and acridine orange into a microhematocrit tube (Quantitative Blood Count, QBC) has been commercially developed for the quantitation of blood counts and has been used for the diagnosis of malaria. We evaluated this test for its usefulness in the diagnosis of filariasis. Upon centrifugation, the parasites were concentrated in the...

Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of costimulatory interactions for effector CD4+ T helper (Th) cell development during the primary immune response. However, the role of costimulatory molecules in memory CD4+ T cell differentiation is not well understood. One model used to study the Th immune response involves oral infection of mice with the gastrointestinal nematode parasite Heligmosomoides polygyrus. Although the primary immune response to H. polygyrus is a chronic infection,...

An outbreak of dracunculiasis occurred in north-west Eritrea in mid 1969, resulting in 58 documented and 40 suspected human cases. Although the infective agent could not be traced to the suspected well in Keru, perhaps because the water was treated before being examined, strong circumstantial epidemiologic evidence clearly pointed to this well as the sole common infective source. Further, the manner in which water was taken from this well permitted that kind of contamination required to...

Our goal in this project was to study, formalize and model biological regulatory processes and explore potential computational paradigms that are inspired by those new abstractions. We focused on developing appropriate level models for gene regulation, intercellular signaling and signal transduction mechanisms using the vast amount of information on the development and the behavior of organisms. In conjunction, to the efforts to better understand biological systems we focused on abstracting and...

The broad overall objective of this project is to develop a successful pest management scheme to control cockroaches on board naval ships and on shore facilities, based on the use of promising entomophilic nematodes in conjunction with baits, attractants and harborage-inoculation devices. In addition, four juvenile hormone analogs were evaluated for possible use in controlling cockroaches on naval ships and shore facilities. The entomophilic nematode, Neoaplectana carpocapsae=DD-136, and...

The nematode parasite, B: polygyrus, has been extensively used as a model to study the type 2 in vivo immune response. This response is characterized by the development of ILA producing T cells which mediate the development of other allergy associated effector cell populations. Following oral inoculation with H. polygyrus larvae, the host rapidly develops a type 2 immune response characterized by intestal mastocytosis, blood eosinophilia, elevations in T cell IL-2R expression, in situ CD4+ T...

Capillaria philippinensis, the tiny nematode causing intestinal capillariasis in humans, is a unique parasite. It is one of the newest parasites that has been shown to infect humans; it can occur in epidemic proportions and chronic untreated infections can lead to death. Furthermore, its life cycle is unusual in that the female worms are capable of producing living larvae as well as eggs, leading to autoinfection and hyperinfections. Reprints.

We have examined and documented several changes in the benthic community structure of Lake Pontchartrain. The change from dominance by large Rangia cuneata to dominance by very small hydrobiid gastropods, for instance, has occurred since the last large-scale study was done 25 years ago. We have also discussed changes in benthic community function in Lake Pontchartrain. We have characterized the lake as a functioning as a one-resource system, with the filter-feeding zooplankton, the...

The volume is one of a series of six in the second edition of an annotated bibliography on various aspects of immunofluorescence and its use. The first six-volume edition was published in 1965 and included citations for the period 1905 through 1962. The present edition covers the period 1963 through 1965; Volume III contains 208 annotated literature citations, arranged according to major subject areas, and a complete author index.

The pathogenicity of two different entomogenous nematodes (Neoaplectana carpocapsae and N. glaseri) for the German cockroach (Blattella germanica) was investigated. Infective juveniles of each test species were placed in an infection chamber consisting of a standard petri dish with filter paper. At sufficient concentrations, the invasive of N. carpocapsae (DD-136) reduced roach populations significantly. However, the invasive of N. glaseri proved considerably less virulent.

Manter: Journal of Parasite Biodiversity (October 15, 2021) number 17. http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/manter/18 doi: 10.32873/unl.dc.manter17 Abstract Between 1817 and 1835 Johann Natterer collected 1,729 samples of endoparasitic helminths in Brazil and southern Venezuela. Of the 323 names that were assigned to the collected nematode specimens, 163 are still valid and accepted species, 84 are still doubtful, and 76 must be rejected. In this work, each name is analyzed and correlated to the...

Studies on blood chemistry and hematology show that the figures for pygmy chimpanzees in nearly every case fall within the normal human range. When the pygmy chimpanzees first arrived their hemoglobins and hematocrits were low and each successive estimation showed improvement up to the present. The following parasites were found on arrival: Strongyloides, Enterobius, Trichomonas, Sucking Lice, Microfilariae, Cestodes, and Nematodes. Rectal, throat and stool cultures showed the presence of...
