Consideration is given to multi- or single-phase chemical equilibrium problems, showing that, under certain circumstances, a problem involving a very large number of different chemical species may be replaced by one involving relatively few species. The new problem will then be much more amenable to numerical solution than the original problem.

Bulk Sm Co/ Fe nanocomposite magnets were fabricated by high energy ball milling and subsequent quick hot-pressing. Three different parameters were investigated which are soft phase content, type, and distribution. The effect of Fe soft phase content on the magnetic properties of the final bulk samples was examined. Increasing the Fe content significantly increased the saturation magnetization but at the cost of reduced coercivity. The optimum Fe addition for the highest maximum energy product...

To compensate for sparse coverage of the AI events by the SRO/ASRO and SDCS networks, the depth determination program has been modified to process seismic array data. This will substantially increase the proportion of AI events that can be processed. A total of 28 events were examined during this quarter; 14 of these could not be processed due to inadequate data. Of the remaining 14 events, depth estimates were obtained on 6 of them, 4 were found to be outside the 10-80 km depth range examined,...

Oriented eutectic microstructures have been produced in the system Al2O3/ZrO2 using a Bridgman-type crystal-growing furnace. Ingots consisted of elongated columnar grains or colonies. Inside the colonies a rod-type eutectic microstructure consisting of rods of ZrO2 surrounded by an Al2O3 matrix was observed. The eutectic point was re-established at 63 mo1% Al2O3/37.0 mo1% ZrO2 and 1870C. Al203 is the first phase to nucleate when eutectic growth occurs.

A simple technique has been developed to measure the transparency of materials at any specific wavelength (ultraviolet to near infrared) versus temperature. The procedure involves heating a sample between calcium fluoride plates in a brass holder placed in a Cary-14 spectrophotometer. Changes in transmittance at a fixed wavelength are recorded continuously as the temperature is allowed to change slowly. As an illustration of the procedure, the transmission properties of the nematic liquid...

Studies of a copolyester of 20% hydroxybenzoic acid, 40% isophthalic acid and 40% hydroquinone, a mesomorphic polymer, were carried out under pressure. The phase behavior was characterized by the x-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and high pressure DTA techniques. It was found that pressure induced a new crystal habit in the solid and a new mesophase in this polymer. All thermal transitions have been summarized in a proposed phase diagram. The finding of pressure induced mesomorphism confirms...

A study is made of the attenuation of acoustic waves by a suspension of fluid droplets in a fluid medium. Special attention is given to the case of small droplets for which the effect of the surface tension is not negligible. The droplets are allowed to execute large translational motion and to undergo a small deformation from a spherical shape. It is shown that the result of Epstein and Carhart on the attenuation of sound waves in a gas with the suspension of liquid droplets is applicable even...

The following problem which is of possible biological, chemical and physical interest is investigated. A particle existing at time t sub 1 = 0 is assumed to have probabilities q sub n or =0, of being transformed into n similar particles at some random time t 0. The theoretical problems involved in nucleation are being re-examined further. Theoretical computation of cluster energy using a simple molecular- pair model is being explored. The problem is to predict the thermodynamic equilibrium concentration of such clusters. This equilibrium concentration of a certain-sized cluster is related to the free energy of the cluster. The free energy of the cluster in turn involves its translation and rotation energies and also the vibration energy of the...

In many array radars the composite beam is di rected by quantized phase shifters. Regular sequence of quantization errors enhances side lobes and pointing errors. It is recommended to break up the regularity by small, known nonlinear and preferably quasi-random initial phase devia tions in the array elements. This reduces the lobes and pointing errors for a given number of quantization steps, especially in high gain, multi-element arrays.

Polysiloxanes and copolysiloxanes containing the trans 5-(n-undecanyl)-2-(4-cyanophenyl)-1,3-dioxane side group as mesogen were synthesized. Their phase behavior was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and optical polarization microscopy. Homopolymers containing the mesogen and a copolymer containing 33% of the mesogen showed smectic mesomorphism. The copolymers containing the mesogen showed two well defined Tg and thus present strong evidence for a phase separated morphology.

Large crystals of LaAlO3 were successfully grown from a straight PbF2 flux. However, soak temperatures above 1400C are required for solution of LaF3 formed by the reaction of La2O3 and PbF2. These high temperatures result in premature failure of the furnace and platinum container. PbF2 was, therefore, abondoned and a search was initiated to modify the PbF2 flux, or to find a more suitable solvent. Among the solvents investigated were PbO-PbF2, BaO and Bi2O3, all with small additions of B2O3....

Isenthalpic solidification of a pure supercooled liquid is shown to result in either a two-phase solid/liquid mixture in invariant equilibrium or a single-phase, totally solid material in univariant equilibrium, depending on the level of supercooling prior to solidification. The behavior of vapors in bearings should be quite different from that of gases. Thermodynamic processes are treated simply in gas-lubricated bearings, but they are likely to both be more complex and more important in vapor-lubricated bearings. Under most practical operating conditions, condensation can be expected to occur in vapor-lubricated bearings. Consequently, the vapor-lubricated bearing problem is one of two-phase flow. An analytical study of two-phase flow in thrust bearings is being...
