A group of ternary compound semiconductor (I-III-VI2) thin films for future applications in photovoltaic devices is proposed. The consideration of these materials (CuInSe2, CuInTe2 and especially CuInS2) for long range device development is emphasized. Much of the activity to date has been concerned with the growth and properties of CuInX2 films. X-ray and electron diffraction analyses, Hall mobility and coefficient, resistivity and carrier concentration variations with substrate and film...

The previously developed technique of a sandwich coating for silicon crystallinity enhancement in silicon films deposited at low temperature is applied to graphite substrates. The measured increase in silicon crystallinity is comparable to that observed earlier using a quartz substrate. The distribution of aluminum in the silicon films is determined using Auger spectroscopic depth profiling. Carbon diffusion from the substrate into the silicon film is shown to be negligible at a substrate...

A surface potential model is developed to explain dopant effects on chemical vapor deposition. Auger analysis of the interaction between allotropic forms of carbon and silicon films has shown Si-C formation for all forms by glassy carbon. LEED intensity measurements have been used to determine the mean square displacement of surface atoms of silicon single crystals, and electron loss spectroscopy has shown the effect of structure and impurities on surface states located within the band gap. A...

The leather industry is suffering from the negative impact generated by the pollutionit causes to the environment. Nearly 70% of the pollution loads of BOD, COD, and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) are generated from soaking, liming, deliming, pickling and tanning and retanning processes. There is an enormous pressure from the various pollution control bodies to regulate and minimize the amount of pollution generated from the leatherprocessing. The need for use of alternative to chemical methods...

We present models for reprocessing of an intense flux of X-rays and gamma rays expected in the vicinity of gamma ray burst sources. We consider the transfer and reprocessing of the energetic photons into observable features in the X-ray band, notably the K lines of iron. Our models are based on the assumption that the gas is sufficiently dense to allow the microphysical processes to be in a steady state, thus allowing efficient line emission with modest reprocessing mass and elemental...

A surface potential model is proposed to consistently explain the known dopant gas effects on silicon chemical vapor deposition. This model predicts that the effects of the same dopant gases on the diamond deposition rate using methane and carbon tetrachloride should be opposite and similar to those of silane, respectively. Available data are in agreement with this prediction.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF A WIND WHEEL FOR ELECTRIC POWER GENERATION IS DISCUSSED. THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE WIND WHEEL AND THE GENERATOR IS ACCOMPLISHED WITH A POWER CONTROL DEVICE TO PREVENT OVERLOADING THE GENERATOR WHEN THE WIND VELOCITY INCREASES. THE SELF-CONTROLLED RUNNING WHEEL OF THE WIND MOTOR ADJUSTS THE BLADE ANGLE OF ATTACK TO COMPENSATE FOR THE WIND VELOCITY. THE GENERATOR MUST BE DIMENSIONED FOR THE GREATEST WIND INTENSITY IN ORDER TO ACCEPT THE ENTIRE WIND WHEEL POWER. THE WIND...

To determine whether a bacterial film forms on sulfur minerals in situ, various sulfur containing and other minerals were incubated in Penitencia Creek. The rate of cell growth and attachment within the surface microenvironment of mineral surfaces was also determined. To determine whether surfaces enriched with soluble sulfur substrates (cysteine, glutathione, thioglycolate, sulfite, and thiosulfate) increased the rate of growth or attachment of natural communities, membrane enrichments were...

Corrosion is derived from the Latin word “corrosus” meaning away. It can be defined as “the destruction or deterioration and consequent loss of metals through chemical or electrochemical attack by the environment”. The process of corrosion is the transformation of pure metal into its undesired metallic compounds. The life time of metal gets shortened by the corrosion process. Most metals [except noble metals] occur in the form of their compounds such as oxides, sulfides, carbonates,...

A process has been devised for making ternary (specifically, CuInS2) nanocrystals for use as quantum dots (QDs) in a contemplated next generation of high-efficiency solar photovoltaic cells. The process parameters can be chosen to tailor the sizes (and, thus, the absorption and emission spectra) of the QDs.

Reggiatoa and Thiothrix are genera of filamentous, colorless, sulfide oxidizing bacteria. These organisms are microaerophilic, oxidizing sulfide to sulfur in the presence of oxygen. The sulfur accumulates in intracellular sulfur globules - the outstanding morphological feature of these bacteria. Some strains are able to further oxidize the sulfur to sulfate aerobically or reduce the sulfur to sulfide anaerobically. This metabolic versatility makes these bacteria important links in aquatic...

The feasibility of a reactively sputtered thin film CdS - Cu2S solar cell is proven. Identification of the reactively sputtered Cu2S film is made by X-ray diffractometer and spectro-transmission measurements. Because of its simplicity, economical use of material, and high yield, the reactive sputtering process promises to be a low cost method for producing CdS - Cu2S solar cells.

Samples were prepared by melting the metals, followed by annealing to various temperatures. The result was a structurally weak material. Sputtered films on sapphire substrates were prepared and studied. The substrates give the films mechanical strength and permit easy attachment of electrical leads. Materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, electrical resistance vs. temperature, and critical current measurements. Some of the results on CuMo6S8 are presented.

Organosulfur compounds are involved in osmoregulation and salinity tolerance in some cyanobacteria and photosynthetic eukaryotes. Glycinebetaine, the osmolyte of the halotolerant cyanobacterium, Aphanothece halophytica, requires the sulfonium compound. S-adenosyl-methionine (SAM) for its synthesis. Glutamate is the nitrogen source, SAM is the methyl carbon and serine the carbon backbone source of this unique osmolyte. Inhibitor studies suggest that photorespiration interacts with sulfur...

The development of very low cost long lived Cu2S/CdS thin film solar cells for large scale energy conversion is reported. Excellent evaporated metal grid patterns were obtained using a specially designed aperture mask. Vacuum evaporated gold and copper grids of 50 lines per inch and 1 micron thickness were adequate electrically for the fine mesh contacting grid. Real time roof top sunlight exposure tests of encapsulated CdS cells showed no loss in output after 5 months. Accelerated life testing...

During the three years of finding, we have carefully corrected for two sensor/platform problems, developed a physically based retrieval algorithm to calculate SST, wind speed, water vapor, cloud liquid water and rain rates, validated these variables, and demonstrated that satellite microwave radiometers can provide very accurate SST retrievals through clouds. Prior to this, there was doubt by some scientists that the technique of microwave SST retrieval from satellites is a viable option. We...

Heavily doped n-type single crystals of GaN were grown epitaxially by the vapor phase reaction of GaCl and NH3 on Sapphire substrates. GaN is a direct gap semiconductor with a bandgap of 3.25eV. It fluoresces efficiently in the visible as well as the UV. Single crystals of AlP were prepared by the disproportionation of gaseous AlI in the presence of PH3 either as freely nucleated whiskers or epitaxially on GaAs or Si substrates. A description of a computer program entitled VORTEX that may be used to determine the aerodynamic performance of horizontal axis wind turbines is given. The computer code implements a vortex method from finite span wind theory and determines the induced velocity at the rotor disk by integrating the Biot-Savart law. It is assumed that the trailing helical vortex filaments form a wake of constant diameter (the rigid wake assumption) and travel downstream at the free stream velocity. The program...

Mean changes in the surface elevation near the west margin of the Greenland ice sheet are measured using Seasat altimetry and altimetry from the Geosat Exact Repeat Mission (ERM). The Seasat data extend from early July through early October 1978. The ERM data extend from winter 1986-87 through fall 1988. Both seasonal and multi-year changes are measured using altimetry referenced to GEM T2 orbits. The possible effects of orbit error are minimized by adjusting the orbits into a common ocean...

The optical and electronic properties of single crystal Cu2S-CdS photovoltaic cells were investigated. In these cells trapped charge near the interface which is manifested by a persistent increase in junction capacitance (the photocapacitance) plays a significant role in determining the carrier transport properties. Photovoltaic cells may be used to convert sunlight directly into electrical energy and into low-grade heat to be used for large scale terrestrial solar energy conversion. Both forms of energy can be utilized if such cells are deployed in close proximity to the consumer (rooftop). CdS/Cu2S solar cells are an example of cells which may be produced inexpensively enough to become economically attractive. Cell parameters relevant for combined solar conversion are presented. Critical issues, such as...

A chemical spray process for the production of thin film CdS-Cu2S solar cells is discussed that is projected to cost less than $60/kW in very large scale production. The average efficiency of these cells has been improved from less than 0.3% in 1971 about 4.5% at present. Further developments for the process are considered to raise the efficiency, and to attain long life stability.

Polycrystalline CuInS2 films were deposited by aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition using both solid and liquid ternary single-source precursors (SSPs) which were prepared in-house. Films with either (112) or (204/220) preferred orientation, had a chalcopyrite structure, and (112)-oriented films contained more copper than (204/220)-oriented films. The preferred orientation of the film is likely related to the decomposition and reaction kinetics associated with the molecular structure of...

We present analyses of two Ginga observations and two observations from the ROSAT database of NGC 7469, focusing on the spectral variability observed on timescales of days and longer. During the 1988 Ginga observation, the hardness ratio (8-21 keV/3.4-5.7 keV) increased significantly as the total flux decreased by 30%. As the spectrum is well fit by the reflection model and since the spectra variability dominates the higher energy band, this could be explained by either a variation in the power...

COPAMS, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Air Monitoring System, derives from technology involved in building unmanned spacecraft. The Nimbus spacecraft carried experimental sensors to measure temperature, pressure, ozone, and water vapor, and instruments for studying solar radiation and telemetry. The process which relayed these findings to Earth formed the basis for COPAMS. The COPAMS system consists of data acquisition units which measure and record pollution level, and sense wind speed and...

The most significant results of the Delaware team are summarized. The CdS/Cu2S band model is further developed, and the space charge region in CdS is analyzed. Field enhanced recombination seems to limit the field near the interface. This and possibly other field effects force continuity of both quasi-Fermi levels through the interface. The Cu2S predominantly determines the current; the CdS seems to determine the open circuit voltage behavior of the cell. (Author)
