This article reports on a research conducted in major Ghanaian cities of Accra and Kumasi that explored urban planners’ perspectives on the urban resilience philosophy, and evaluated the available strategies for absorbing disturbances (e.g., floods, rapid population growth, and slum development) while retaining the identity, structure and functionality of Ghanaian cities. Using social science research methods including in-depth interviews with urban planners, and document reviews, findings...

The estimate of the income distribution of the Jewish population of New York City is based on the main on data from the Current Population Survey conducted by the Bureau of the Census on the 1970 income distribution of the city's population. While the methodology used probably results in an underestimation of Jewish income and, therefore, an overestimate of the Jewish poor, the data describe with some reality the economic situation of the Jewish community. Some major findings are as follows:...

Since the Independence in 1947, India has undergone a major transformation in the composition of urban population which now stands at 32%. The state has responded by having a number of schemes to meet the urban challenges for the growing population. Initially, through the five year plans the government had adopted the role of service provider how-ever over time the government has allowed for a larger role for the private sector. This has led to large scale development of private housing for the...

Members of ethnic and racial groups, such as African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, or Native Americans, particularly those who are unemployed and living in low income districts, have continued to struggle to overcome social barriers. A review of the literature reveals that the lack of opportunity or means to overcome social and economic barriers caused by unemployment has precipitated a number of psychological and psychosocial disorders. Unemployed individuals who suffer from...

While it has been asserted that rape has increased in frequency over the past generation, part of this increase may be due to a greater willingness to report rape to the authorities. A study was conducted to examine the frequency of rape and to describe the characteristics of rape victims. A random questionnaire survey of 4,340 adults in five urban areas was conducted in 1983. The results revealed that 4% of men and 16% of women surveyed claimed to have been raped. When adjustments for...

It is shown what the peregrine falcon, threatened with extinction by DDT, and the urban poor have in common. Specifically, a study in New Haven, Connecticut was done to explore the relation between social class and the average emissions for the air pollutants: carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and particulate matter. (Data are taken from a New Haven Health Department study in 1968.) Lower class urban dwellers are more often exposed to air pollution; and that each of...

Homelessness is growing among the elderly as it is among every other age cohort in America, but the elderly appear to be underrepresented. This underrepresentation is puzzling, since the elderly appear to have unique vulnerabilities to homelessness. This study explored the connection between the growing shortage of low rent housing, the unique housing related problems of the elderly, and homelessness itself. A sample of seniors who had experienced serious housing problems was identified from...

The relationship between job scope and job satisfaction was examined for a sample of urban, predominantly blue-collar, employees. Incumbents in sixteen jobs provided data on job characteristics (N=164) and job satisfaction (N=593). Rank-order correlation coefficients were computed between mean job scope indices and mean job satisfaction levels for the sixteen jobs. Results showed that job scope indices (e.g., variety, autonomy, etc.) were positively related to satisfaction with the "work...
