After over 400 years of promise, Israel crossed over the Jordan on into the Promised Land. They then come to the seemingly secure city of Jericho. They followed the instructions of the Lord, and they were able to achieve Godâs promises. After these miracles delivered into their hands, Israel comes to Ai. Israelâs defeat at Ai was a humiliating one. Each of us will face an Ai in our lives. Life is full of setbacks. The secret to life is overcoming the daily challenges and setbacks. Our...

Variance request from a resident of Glidden Drive living adjacent to Evergreen Lane was the only item on the agenda. Evergreen Lane, inland, is a town road, and setback requirements are 65 feet from the centerline. Since this road is used only for access to two properties, it seemed like a reasonable request to be able to build closer than regulations allow, and the Board agreed with the petitioners and granted the variance.

The investigation into the application of the grooved-charge method of controlling fragmentation has been continued to see how well, with a spin-stabilized shell, a charge of H.E. cast into a fluted liner withstands the set-back and centrifugal forces when the shell is fired from a gun. Shells fitted with liners and filled with cast RDX/TNT 35/45 have been fired and recovered; the fragmentation of these shells is compared with that of unused shells. No appreciable difference was found although...

The objective of this contract was to redesign the timer escape wheel and lever to make more efficient use of the input torque and to provide a locking feature for the timer spin detent after it spins out. This redesign reduced the undesirable effects of balloting during ballistics by eliminating mechanical interference in the escapement. Ballistic test results with the redesigned escape wheel and lever were excellent. The redesign of the timer spin detent system was dropped because a ballistic...

A procedure is described for designing S + A setback mechanisms of the rotary-leaf and spring type to obtain optimum safety and reliability. The design procedure, developed from a mathematical analysis, is described in detail. This procedure is formulated so that little mathematical background is required to use it. An analytical study is made of the effect of varying the mass of the leaves upon the accidental drop safety of the mechanism. The drop safety is defined as the absolute minimum...

A wind-driven fluidic generator of the reed type has been developed at the Harry Diamond Laboratories (HDL) as a power source for the Advanced Beehive Fuze. Results of laboratory studies and field tests conducted in 75-mm Howitzers indicate that the fluidic generator is capable of meeting the muzzle action requirements of the Beehive fuze. Airgun test results indicate that the device is mechanically rugged to withstand the high setback force environment (25 k g) encountered by the Beehive...

The modular setback pin (MSP) was designed to operate in both the timer and trigger of the M557 mechanical time fuze. The device senses all standard gun firing environments and differentiates between them and handling shocks, including drops of 40 feet and higher. Further, the unit locks in the functioned position (down) after the setback pulse ceases. This prohibits the setback pin from interfering with the operation of the spin detent. A computer-aided study to determine the time required for...

The objective of this project was to design a timer lever assembly which eliminates the lever staff and pallet supports. A design was conceived which combined the aluminum lever staff and pallets supports with the steel lever staff and pallet pins. Because of the required staking operation, the hardness of the lever staff and pallet pins had to be decreased from the current design. Laboratory and environmental testing were performed with satisfactory results. However, after ballistic testing,...

The objective of this study was to develop the technology of manufacturing the M509A2E1 fuze used in the 105-mm heat round. The detailed design of the assembly stations was completed and a functional layout of the line was established. Fabrication and procurement of the hardware necessary to set up the critical stations were initiated. The planned phase II of the contract will provide for fabrication, installation, and debugging of the equipment.

The objective of this program has been to develop theoretical and semi-empirical methods to enable engineers to design ribbon unwinders with reasonable accuracy and a minimum of development effort. This basic objective has been fulfilled, despite the fact that the degree of predictive accuracy depends to some extent on the design details of the fuze containing the ribbon unwinder. Some of the conclusions are that (1) Ribbon materials had to be in a dead soft condition to be suitable for...

To comply with Presidential Executive Order 12759, which requires federal facilities to increase industrial/process energy efficiency 20 percent by the fiscal year 2000 (FY00) in comparison with FY85, the Department of Defense must improve the efficiency of its laundry facilities. Army laundry managers presently reduce utility consumption by using setback timers on equipment and lights, disconnecting or disabling unused equipment, installing occupancy sensors in seldom-used areas, and replacing...

Experiments were conducted using the activator in order to establish some limits of the sensitivity of explosives to premature ignition during the launch of an artillery projectile. The ignition mechanisms considered were compression alone, the heating of air trapped adjacent to the explosive by rapid compression (compressive heating), and frictional heating. We found that compression alone did not cause ignition with peak pressures up to 1.67 GPa (16. 7kbar). When, on the other hand, a base...

Comp B exhibits one of the highest sensitivity levels and responds violently. The data for TNT provide no reason to believe that it is less sensitive to ignition than Comp B. Composition A3 Type II may be considered the least sensitive explosive tested. It exhibits a...
