This design was inspired by a model by jdharris (here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2776254), however I didnt have a spare HDD spindle. I did have 608 bearing so made this instead. It spins very freely and smoothly; FAR better than a regular vertical spool holder (like the stock mega S holder). The bearings I bought from aliexpress are not the best, so they have very slight inner-race play, but it doesnt affect the spin at all. They're also very cheap (10pcs for 2EUR) so its not a problem...

Summary I use 40% infill for bracket and 20% for all other parts. no supports needed use concentric top and bottom patter for all parts, except bracket. if you mount spool holder at the top of the frame, you should use pack of balls 4...6mm - spool holder base and spool holder cone is the bearing, so just add some balls (that's why you should use concentric pattern). I have printed several sample spool holders off Thingiverse that fit makerbox samples, and my favorite was the one by Nerys. However I wanted something a little wider and larger, and plus it gave me more practice for designing in scratch in Fusion 360. I put a purple and gray Nerys sample spool next to to my black and blue one to show the size difference. This Thing is a two-part filament spool holder for the Bits-From-Bytes (BFB, now part of 3D Systems) 3DTouch printer. The spool holders which come with the original printer are for filament spools with very large holes (> 3 inches), which are hard to find these days. **Update! 9/14** I have tried out many spool holders and this style is by far the one that i fancy the most, no screws, no bolts, no 608zz bearings, no logos. It fits many different spools sizes (Spool wheels must be smooth).This does feed very smoothly, not too smooth that your spools unwind (a problem i had on other spool holders) but just right. *The ring now has clips that will keep your spool rotating in the right direction. Since my filamentholder broke down i had to come up with an idea to fix it. This way the spool has enough room to move freely. Distance is 100mm. Clamps have 10mm depth. Thickness 2mm. Two pieces hold my movind spool very well (the rod of the spool is not fixed).

Print the two Spool Hooks and mount them anywhere beside your printer. The hooks cary a 10mm rod. You need to assembley 4 x M5 screws and 4 (hammer)nuts and a 10mm rod in your costumized length. I recommend to print it 100% infill. Tried 30% in front but thightening the screws damaged the PLA. It wasn't rigid enough. In the files you will find two versions: one with endstop and one without. The endstop version prevents the rod moving axial.

Universal spool holder for stock Ender 3 spool holder. The 3 spiral arm will adapt and support a great range of spools with different internal diameters. To make it work, you need to print a pair of those and clip in on both sides of the spool, then place the spool on the Ender 3 stock holder.

An adapter for M10/M12 screw (the adapter has 12 mm inner diameter) to spool hole (50 mm adapter external diameter), to let your filament spools to unroll easier on a M10 or M12 screw filament holder. It helps to align the center of rotation to the center of mass of the spool. As a result, less force is required to the extruder motor to pull the filament from the spool. Fast and easy to print :)

Ultra smooth spool holder for M200 spools (as well as other spools with 58mm hole). The holder is based on two commonly available 6805 (25x37x7mm) bearings.

For those who wants to improve their Creality Printer like me with a full bearing spool holder axis, just try this! A new version is coming for 2020. I've made the axis more rigid, and the conception more logic from a mechanical view... I learn, and improve. You need to print two pieces "Etau_de_bobine.stl" If you see my draw on FreeCAD, you'll see one on the left, one on the right, in purple. Don't throw away the original nut for the spool holder! You'll need this too! Printing this...
